Anthony Groot Baltink was born and raised in China before studying in the United States, but the Dutch passport holder was adamant he wanted to suit up for Hong Kong’s men’s under-22 basketball squad at November’s National Games.

Having lived in the city for only the past few years, the 18-year-old said it was the “incredibly enriching experience” he had enjoyed here since finishing school in the US that prompted him to decide to play for Hong Kong.

“The city’s unique culture and its vibrant community have made it feel like home,” Groot Baltink said. “Even before I moved here, I would always come and visit, [and] I always found [this place] very interesting and fun.

“I look forward to staying here, becoming a better player and trying to represent Hong Kong. I chose Hong Kong over other countries because of its welcoming environment and the opportunity to contribute to its growing basketball scene and bring success to Hong Kong.”

Groot Baltink added that he had no problem calling Hong Kong “my home”.

“This place is special to me because of its resilience and diversity,” he said. “Despite spending only a few years here, I’ve developed strong connections with the community, and I appreciate the opportunity to represent this city on the international stage.”
