Navigating home renovations can be a daunting task for a growing family.

Francis Cheung and Edith Hui spent seven years in their two-storey, three-bedroom flat in Tai Wai before settling on what they felt was the right look for their home: distinctly French, with opulent touches inspired by one of the most visited monuments in Europe, the 17th century Palace of Versailles, on the outskirts of Paris.

The couple, who live in the 1,380 sq ft flat with their twin boys, now aged nine, had initially tended towards more minimalist, child-friendly interiors.

“We spent six, seven years just thinking about [the renovation],” says Cheung, a semi-retired accountant.

A photograph of an all-white Parisian flat with towering shelves and baroque-style mouldings finally prompted them to begin. “We first moved in 10 years ago with a vision to turn it around into something nice,” he says. “We couldn’t identify a concept until one morning, while having breakfast, I came across that image and I thought, ‘We could do that.’”

In 2019, having taken a trip to France for inspiration, and after meeting a few designers, Cheung and Hui, a doctor, chose to work with Frankie Wong, co-founder of Hong Kong studio Pocket Square. Their brief was simple: transform the home into a French haven filled with versatile storage solutions.
