When it comes to customer service, vehicle quality and ride comfort, Hong Kong’s taxi services have built up quite a chequered reputation.

Sadly, rudeness, smoky vehicles, poor service and cash-only payment options have become more the hallmarks of the industry in recent years.

At long last, a welcome change is coming. The first of 3,500 premium cabs are due to start rolling out this month, with newer and larger vehicles featuring wireless internet and charging facilities, ride-hailing options and more stringent training for drivers.

Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan said the premium taxis could propel the industry towards providing better service.

She rightly urged the sector to “keep up with the times with breakthroughs and innovations to avoid being disconnected with the times”.

First out the blocks are Joie’s 480 taxis, which will eventually expand to 800, whose drivers must pass interviews and tests on driving and attitude, and receive training on quality service standards, including those passengers with special needs.
