Some restaurants in Hong Kong’s North Point were forced to close after two compromised water pipes damaged an underground gas line on Monday, affecting neighbourhood residents and disrupting traffic.

The pipes are responsible for delivering fresh water and flushing water to users in the area of Tsat Tsz Mui Road, Kam Hong Street and Shu Kuk Street, the Water Supplies Department said.

Lanes between Kam Hong Street and Shu Kuk Street on eastern Hong Kong Island’s Tsat Tsz Mui Road were closed to traffic due to flooding in the area that began at around 5.30am.

Citybus routes 82 and 85 were diverted, and the Transport Department asked motorists to use alternative routes amid the busy traffic.

The Transport Department said the road resumption would depend on the repair progress of the Water Supplies Department.

Towngas, also known as the Hong Kong and China Gas Company, said the rupture had damaged an underground gas pipeline.
