Hongkongers who buy a HK$99 (US$12.70) monthly pass will be able to take their pets on light rail trains on weekends and public holidays starting from May 1 under the MTR Corporation’s trial run of its new animal-friendly policy.

The rail giant said on Tuesday that the new pass, which does not include the standard fare, would allow commuters to travel with one cat or dog in an enclosed carrier. Other pets are not allowed, and owners may only purchase one pass every month.

The light rail network, which serves the northwestern New Territories, is the first line to test out the company’s pet-friendly policy. The MTR Corp and bus firm KMB earlier announced they were considering allowing small animals on public transport.

The MTR Corp has also established guidelines regulating when and how passengers can bring pets onto trains.

“This is to balance the diverse needs of different passengers,” said Cheris Lee Yuen-ling, head of the company’s operating and metro segment.

She added that the trial run would only cover weekends and public holidays to prevent other passengers travelling to school or work on weekdays from being affected.
