A Hong Kong man has died after his van crashed into a fire engine that had stopped to attend to a separate traffic accident on West Kowloon Highway.
Police said the 44-year-old man was driving along the highway in the direction of Kwai Chung when he crashed into the emergency vehicle near Tai Kok Tsui’s Olympian City shopping and residential complex at around 2.10pm on Thursday.
Images from the scene show a severely damaged GoGoX delivery van. The company is a popular on-demand van-hailing service.
Police said the vehicle appeared to have lost control and crashed into the fire engine, which had been parked to attend to the earlier accident.
The driver was trapped in his van following the crash, and emergency services personnel worked to immediately free him from the wreckage, the force said.
He was unconscious and sent to Kwong Wah Hospital in Yau Ma Tei, where he was pronounced dead at 3.20pm.

Police said that the earlier incident involved a truck that had slammed into a water barrier on one side of the highway. No injuries were reported in that accident.
The Fire Services Department told the Post it had deployed four fire engines and two ambulances to the scene of the initial accident. The fire engines’ lights were flashing and pylons had been laid out to warn drivers, the department said.
After the van crash, the department deployed a further six fire engines and two ambulances, it said.
The cause of the accident that led to the man’s death was still being investigated. Police have asked anyone who witnessed the accident or had information to offer to contact officers at 3661 9188.
GoGoX pledged to assist the driver’s family and said it was coordinating with its insurance provider.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident and express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of the deceased,” it said. “The platform has immediately identified the driver’s details through its internal system, contacted his family and visited the hospital to provide support and financial assistance.”
The Transport Department said at 5.28pm that parts of the highway that had been closed off due to the accidents had reopened to all traffic.
The closure had caused traffic congestion earlier in the day.
