Hong Kong’s Democratic Party to hold meeting in April to discuss disbanding
Special meeting will seek to establish a mandate to allow leadership to handle legal procedures related to group’s proposed dissolution

Hong Kong’s Democratic Party will hold a special meeting next month to discuss authorising the group’s leadership to make preparations for the organisation’s dissolution.
Party chairman Lo Kin-hei said on Tuesday that the extraordinary general meeting would be held on April 13. The gathering was intended to gauge members’ views and seek a mandate for disbanding.
“It is not a statutory requirement, but we hope to take this opportunity to listen to what our members think,” Lo said. “After all, it is an important matter.”
In February, the party’s central committee decided that it would ask members whether the group should dissolve. It also said it would set up a task force to handle the legal steps involved.
Lo stressed at the time that the party had the financial resources to continue operating, but its leadership had made a “collective decision” to propose disbanding after assessing the political environment and what it could achieve in the long run.
On Tuesday, the party chairman said he expected members would generally support the proposal, and that the group could complete the dissolution process within the year.
