Chinese officials embark on tour to rally export firms facing Trump tariff shocks

Communist Party chiefs and mayors in China’s coastal provinces kick off company visits, while task forces help exporters find new markets

Top local officials in China’s coastal provinces have started visiting companies to help them manage the shock of US President Donald Trump’s tariffs, while task forces have been deployed to support exporters.

On Monday, Zhou Bin, Communist Party boss of Yancheng city in the eastern province of Jiangsu, visited local manufacturers and vowed to “do everything possible” to solve their problems.

On the same day, Zhang Wenjie, mayor of Wenzhou in Zhejiang province, conducted a similar tour, in which he stressed the need for policies to “stabilise, expand, adjust and optimise” trade and exports.

On Thursday, Shi Zhijun, party secretary of Jiangsu’s Huaian city, visited a local industrial estate, where he spoke to companies about the difficulties they faced and ordered officials to try their best to help them.

Kong Fanping, mayor of the city of Weihai in Shandong province, visited a local hi-tech zone to understand the situation on the ground on Wednesday of last week. She urged local tech companies to expand into emerging markets and seize the opportunities that might arise during the crisis.

On April 8, Chen Shaowang, mayor of the city of Dalian in Liaoning province, visited companies with foreign owners and called on them to remain confident in China and to expand their business in the country.

On the same day, Lian Maojun, party boss of Binhai New Area in the northern port city of Tianjin, visited foreign-owned companies and urged an “all out” effort to stabilise trade and foreign investment. He told local officials to provide tailored policies based on the needs of companies.
