The former cheerleader worked for the Trump-Vance election campaign before being assigned to the media team alongside press secretary Karoline Leavitt following Trump’s victory

Days after Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States, he announced the appointment of Sonny Joy Nelson to the White House as special assistant to the president, and media affairs director. Nelson previously served as director of media affairs and surrogates for Trump and Vance’s 2024 election campaign, and has long been an avid Maga loyalist.
After taking on her new role, Nelson joined assistant to the president and press secretary Karoline Leavitt to address reporters in a briefing. “Welcome to the Trump White House, where truth and transparency actually matter,” Leavitt said, per Daily Beast. Nelson later shared the news of her appointment on X, writing, “Honoured is an understatement.”

According to her LinkedIn profile, Nelson hails from North Carolina. She studied broadcasting in electronic media at Campbell University, graduating in 2018. She also earned a bachelor of science degree in health communication from the same institution. While at Campbell, she had a collegiate career in cheerleading. Nelson appears to be a devout Christian, as evidenced by her Instagram and X bios that read, “Jesus paid it all”.

Nelson, who describes herself as “outspokenly pro-life” on her Facebook page, began her career as a marketing specialist at the Hand of Hope Pregnancy Resource Center, per her LinkedIn. She then joined the wannabe president’s campaign committee, Donald J. Trump for President Inc, advancing from executive assistant to associate director of strategic communications within a year. Most recently, she served as the director of media affairs at the conservative social media platform GETTR and the Republican National Committee. She was also a booking producer for the right-wing channel Real America’s Voice.
