Nancy Wilson of the iconic 70s rock band Heart is being blasted by some corners of the internet for saying she thinks it’s “more embarrassing than ever” to be an American.

The 71-year-old singer discussed the topic during her interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel earlier this month. “We were kind of embarrassed at that time to call ourselves American because of the dirty politics of the Vietnam war,” she told the publication on the subject of their 1975 song “Crazy on You”. “To be as subtle as possible, it’s more embarrassing now,” she added.
Others jumped to the musician’s defence, with one netizen writing, “She’s not talking about wealth. She’s talking about democracy, credibility, accountability and justice. Those are what were bought and sold.”

Here’s what we know about Nancy Wilson amid her controversial statements.
