After many years at Hong Kong Stadium, the annual Hong Kong Sevens tournament moved to Kai Tak Stadium in East Kowloon this year. Some of those who attended the Sevens were quoted as saying the venue’s disorganised catering, with vendors running out of food and drinks, left them hungry, thirsty and angry. This may be a concern for music fans, with British pop band Coldplay, Hong Kong actor-singer Nicholas Tse Ting-fung, Singaporean singer-songwriter JJ Lin and Taiwanese singer-songwriter Jay Chou Jie-lun all playing at Kai Tak Stadium over the next few weeks, while the Hong Kong Football Festival will take place there in July. Fortunately, there is an abundance of food and drink options in the surrounding area. Here are nine Kai Tak area restaurants to satisfy concertgoers before or after the event. 1. Dai pai dong experience by Dorsett Kai Tak Coldplay will be the first musical act to play at the stadium on April 8, 9, 11 and 12 as part of the band’s “Music of the Spheres” world tour. On the same dates, the Dorsett Kai Tak hotel will host a dai pai dong experience at the adjacent Kai Tak Sports Park area. The hotel will recreate a dai pai dong Hong Kong-style street food stall in its grand ballroom on the ground floor, serving a menu of Hong Kong favourites and Hong Kong-brewed craft beers by Young Master Brewery. On April 8, the dai pai dong will open between 9.30pm and 1am, but otherwise it will open at 5pm so concertgoers can get a pre-show meal and drink before seeing the “Yellow” stars play. Food Gala in Kai Tak Mall 1 Kai Tak Sports Park’s three malls also have plenty of offerings, from a small food court to a variety of restaurants. Kai Tak Mall 1’s Food Gala offers a range of mostly East Asian dishes, including Blessed Alley’s omelette rice, Fresh and Fresh’s clam vermicelli, JMT’s Korean options, Jollibean’s tofu drinks and desserts, Pepper Lunch Express’s hotplate steak rice and Tiger Ramen’s Japanese carbs. N+ Burger in Kai Tak Mall 2 For those looking for something meatier and heartier, head to Kai Tak Mall 2, the second mall inside Kai Tak Sports Park, where N+ Burger sells Angus beef patties and sourdough buns. The burger shop boasts that it is Hong Kong’s first with its own pasture. Its beef is free-range, grain-fed and halal. It recently devised a Sichuan spicy burger. The Steam Hut in Kai Tak Mall 3 Serving mainly dim sum and Cantonese soups, The Steam Hut at Kai Tak Mall 3 offers some wholesome meal options before or after a hyper concert experience. Run by the wittily named Hong Kong hospitality group Prawn Hub, it features an extensive southern Chinese menu, with Fujianese dishes such as “Buddha jumps over the wall” as well as items including quail egg siu mai and pandan kaya steamed shrimp. Hungry Tiger Hidden Dragon in the Joypolis Sports Centre Also within Kai Tak Sports Park, but inside Joypolis Sports’ five-storey indoor sports complex, is Hungry Tiger Hidden Dragon. From good old gyozas and contemporary Japanese-inspired small plates to wings, pizzas and Wagyu burgers, the fun fusion restaurant has a bold red interior, a large outdoor space and a nice view of the Kai Tak Stadium. It will stay open late on event nights, making it the perfect place to enjoy some cocktails and bar bites after a show. Coucou Reserve at Airside About 20 minutes’ walk from the Kai Tak Stadium is the major shopping centre Airside, where Coucou Reserve offers well-presented hotpot set menus – including Wagyu beef and premium seafood – designed for different group sizes. Great for sharing, the semi-self-service Taiwanese restaurant is popular across Hong Kong, where it operates eight branches. Coucou’s hotpot soup bases range from Taiwanese mala (numbing spicy), Thai tom yum kung, and Guizhou spicy and sour to traditional Chinese medicinal options such as fish maw and chicken. Bellavista at Airside For those who may want a classier meal to round off the evening, Bellavista, with a large pet-friendly outdoor seating area, features an international menu with a focus on Mexican cuisine. Take your pick from Mexican options such as tacos, nachos and quesadillas, or go wild with risotto, rib-eye steak, and chicken wings. There is also a cocktail and mocktail menu for concertgoers who are not ready for the night to end. Full of Congee in To Kwa Wan This humble late-night To Kwa Wan spot serves piping hot bowls of juk (rice porridge) with choose-your-own toppings, and an extensive choice of traditional cheung fun (steamed rice noodle rolls), as old-school congee shops usually do. The cheung fun are rolled by hand, which gives them their unique wrinkled texture, and feature beef, fish, shrimp, pork or vegetable fillings. The best part? Full of Congee is just under 10 minutes’ walk from the Kai Tak Stadium, which makes it perfect for a quick carb break before heading home. 1A Hok Ling Street, To Kwa Wan. Thai E-San Ram Mis in central Kowloon City For those willing to go on a short walk (around 20 minutes), the heart of Kowloon City is known for its selection of authentic Thai restaurants run by immigrants and their descendants. The family-run Thai E-San Ram Mis, for example, is said to have been one of the first Thai restaurants in Kowloon City and is known for serving authentic food at reasonable prices. In true Southeast Asian fashion, it opens until the early morning hours.
