Gaggan No 1 again on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants in 2025, Hong Kong restaurants 2nd and 3rd

The annual awards ceremony for Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants was held at the Grand Hyatt Seoul, South Korea, on March 25, with Gaggan in Bangkok taking home the top spot once again. The theatrical restaurant helmed by the eponymous Gaggan Anand claimed the No 1 slot for a record fifth time. “I think the year is wrong. It was 2015 when I first got this,” Anand joked when getting up on stage. “When I was young I never imagined Asia could be a gastronomic hub.” In second place was Hong Kong restaurant The Chairman, with another Hong Kong restaurant, Wing, rounding out the top 3. Chudaree “Tam” Debhakam accepted the award for Best Female Chef. It is the second year in a row that a Thai chef in Bangkok has received the accolade, with Chudaree following in the footsteps of Pichaya “Pam” Soontornyanakij, chef-owner of Potong, Bangkok, who won the award in 2024. Vicky Cheng of Hong Kong’s VEA and Wing received the Chefs’ Choice award, which is voted on by industry peers. He follows closely in the footsteps of Danny Yip of The Chairman, who received last year’s award. The Sustainable Restaurant Award went to Locavore NXT in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia, which successfully diverted 98.4 per cent of its restaurant waste away from landfills in its first year of operation. The One to Watch Award, which recognises a restaurant with potential to rise in the 50 Best rankings, went to Farmlore in Bengaluru, India, by chef Johnson Ebenezer and entrepreneur Kaushik Raju, an 18-seat restaurant which also ranked 68th in the 51-100 long list. The duo also run an organic 15-hectare (37-acre) farm just outside the city that dictates what is served on the South Indian tasting menu. 2024’s One to Watch awardee, Lamdre in Beijing, debuted on the list at 50th. The Best Sommelier Award went to Kazutaka Ozawa of Tokyo’s Crony. The restaurant by Michihiro Haruta also debuted at 30th on the list. The award was announced in February and chef Jordy Navarra used the opportunity to reflect and pay tribute to the late Margarita Fores, who he said was “the true embodiment of Filipino hospitality”. The most emotional moment of the night came during the presentation of the Icon Award, with William Drew of 50 Best Restaurants announcing that the award would be given, posthumously, to Fores. Her son, Amado, accepted the award on her behalf. “My mom always said her life purpose was simple – to make the world more beautiful and delicious for others,” he said. Dej Kewkacha, the executive pastry chef at Gaggan at Louis Vuitton, which debuted on the list in 31st place, received the award for best pastry chef – as well as a huge response from his peers, many of whom got up on their feet as they applauded. Eatanic Garden in Seoul received the highest new entry award and ranked 25th in its debut. Chef Tam’s Seasons rose a remarkable 40 spots to 9th to take the highest climber award. The Macau restaurant was also promoted to two Michelin stars earlier this year. It is the second year in a row that the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants awards ceremony and related events have taken place in the South Korean capital, with industry insiders hinting that a new location will be announced for 2026.
